EUJO, the Edinburgh University Jazz Orchestra, brings together talented student musicians for ambitious performances celebrating jazz in its many forms. Built around the scale and versatility of a full jazz orchestra, the ensemble provides a platform for emerging musicians to explore established repertoire, contemporary arrangements and the expressive possibilities of big band performance.
The jazz orchestra format allows brass, woodwind and rhythm sections to combine in arrangements ranging from powerful ensemble passages to individual improvisation. EUJO performances showcase the precision required from a large ensemble while preserving the spontaneity that lies at the heart of jazz. The result is music that can move between sophisticated harmonies, swinging rhythms and energetic solo performances.
Seeing EUJO live offers audiences the opportunity to experience the excitement of a large jazz ensemble at close range. The combination of young musicians, ambitious arrangements and live improvisation gives each concert its own personality. For jazz enthusiasts, students and audiences interested in discovering emerging musical talent, an EUJO concert provides an engaging celebration of big band music and collaborative performance.
