Francis Christian Cabrel (French pronunciation: [fʁɑ̃sis kʁistjɑ̃ kabʁɛ]; born 23 November 1953) is a French singer-songwriter, composer, and guitarist. Considered one of the most influential French musical artists of all time, Cabrel has released numerous albums primarily within the folk genre, with occasional ventures into blues and country. He has sold over 25 million albums throughout his career, with many of his songs becoming classics in French music, including "L'encre de tes yeux", "Je l'aime à mourir", "Petite Marie", "La Dame de Haute-Savoie", "Encore et encore", "Il faudra leur dire", "Sarbacane", "C'est écrit", "Je t'aimais, je t'aime, je t'aimerai", and "La corrida".
Cabrel's first hit, "Petite Marie," released in 1974, was written about his future wife, Mariette. His song "Je l'aime à mourir" gained international fame when covered by Shakira in both French and Spanish. In addition to his French songs, Cabrel also performs in Spanish and occasionally in Occitan and Italian.
Born in Agen, Lot-et-Garonne, Cabrel grew up in a modest family of Venetian Veneto descent. His father worked in a biscuit factory, and his mother was a cafeteria cashier. He spent his childhood in Astaffort, Lot-et-Garonne, with his sister, Martine, and brother, Philippe.
Despite his fame, Cabrel is known for being extremely private. In 2015, he attempted to suppress an unauthorized biography about his life.
