Gary Delaney (born 16 April 1973) is an English writer and stand-up comedian known for his one-liner puns delivered in a slightly deadpan manner.
Delaney received a degree in Economics from the London School of Economics, inspired by his childhood ambition to become a bond trader.
Before embarking on his comedy career, Delaney worked in various jobs, including fixing photocopiers, working at banks, and doing custodian work at garages. He writes for the Birmingham-based FM radio station Kerrang! 105.2 and appeared in the horror-comedy film Trash House. Delaney's material has been subject to plagiarism on the humour website Sickipedia, leading to copyright complaints and eventual attribution of joke authorship on the site.
In 2003, Delaney supported Jerry Sadowitz on a UK tour, performing at notable venues such as Manchester University and Shepherd's Bush Empire, London. His first Edinburgh Festival Fringe show, Purist, received positive reviews, including four-star ratings from comedy website Chortle and The Independent. He made history by having two of his gags included in the top ten of the third annual Dave Award for the Funniest Joke of the Fringe.
Delaney's appearances on Mock the Week and Dave's One Night Stand significantly boosted his profile, leading to a tour of Purist in 2013. His joke about Jersey residents on Mock the Week caused controversy but was defended by the BBC as irreverent humour. He has made a total of 18 appearances on the show.
In May 2013, while contributing to the topical podcast No Pressure to be Funny, Delaney described himself as a "right-wing libertarian".
