Gene were an English alternative rock band formed in London in 1993, consisting of vocalist Martin Rossiter, guitarist Steve Mason, bassist Kevin Miles, and drummer Matt James. Named after Gene Vincent, the 1950s rock and roll pioneer, the band emerged during the height of Britpop with a darker, more introspective sound that set them apart from many of their more optimistic contemporaries. Their music combined jangly guitars reminiscent of The Smiths with Rossiter's impassioned, literate vocals and lyrics that explored themes of alienation, class struggle, and emotional turmoil, earning them critical acclaim and a devoted cult following.
The band released their debut album "Olympian" in 1995, which reached number eight on the UK Albums Chart and included singles like "Sleep Well Tonight" and "Haunted by You." Their follow-up, "Drawn to the Deep End" (1997), peaked at number eight as well and is often considered their finest work, featuring the hit "Fighting Fit" and showcasing Rossiter's increasingly sophisticated songwriting. Gene released two more studio albums, "Revelations" (1999) and "Liberator" (2001), before disbanding in 2004. While they never achieved the commercial success of Oasis or Blur, Gene carved out a distinctive niche with their melancholic yet anthemic sound and Rossiter's powerful vocal delivery.
After more than two decades apart, Gene reunited in 2025 for a series of highly anticipated live shows that celebrated their legacy and reminded fans why they were so cherished. The reunion brought the original lineup back together, demonstrating that their music had lost none of its emotional power or relevance. Gene's influence has grown in the years since their original split, with their blend of romantic melancholy and social consciousness resonating with new generations of listeners. Their refusal to compromise their artistic vision for mainstream appeal has only enhanced their reputation as one of Britpop's most underrated and enduring acts.
