J Mascis, born Joseph Donald Mascis Jr. on December 10, 1965, is an influential American musician, recognized as the singer, guitarist, and main songwriter for the alternative rock band Dinosaur Jr. His notable contributions to music have earned him accolades, including being ranked number 74 on Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists" and holding the fifth position in a similar list by Spin magazine in 2012.

Hailing from Amherst, Massachusetts, Mascis developed a passion for music and drumming at a young age, joining the jazz ensemble in school as a drummer. His musical journey took a pivotal turn when, at 17, he joined the hardcore group Deep Wound. In 1984, he founded Dinosaur Jr. with bassist Lou Barlow and drummer Emmett Jefferson "Patrick" Murphy, transitioning from drums to guitar. The band achieved national success, and Mascis' vocals have been likened to Neil Young, while his guitar riffs are described as "monolithic."

Throughout his career, Mascis demonstrated versatility by engaging in various musical projects. He played drums for the Boston doom metal group Upsidedown Cross, participated in film soundtracks, and even received an invitation from Kurt Cobain to join Nirvana as a guitarist in 1989.

After a hiatus, Dinosaur Jr. reunited in 2005, releasing several albums and touring. Mascis also ventured into solo work, producing albums with his band J Mascis + The Fog and releasing solo albums, such as "Several Shades of Why" in 2011 and "Tied to a Star" in 2014.
