In an era where it sometimes seems as though so many female musical artists are half-dressed and half-baked, Jesca Hoop is refreshingly musically talented. Hoop has stated that her crystal clean voice and eclectic style come from musical influences such as Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, chorale music and murder ballads. Yet, she has a style all her own, combining velvety vocal harmonies with beautiful acoustic guitar work.
Born in Northern California in 1975, Jesca Ada Hoop is a singer-songwriter and guitarist. Influenced by her musical parents at an early age, Jesca Hoop is one of five children that grew up in a Mormon family. She left home during her parents’ separation and lived for a time as a homesteader in the wilds of Arizona, Wyoming and California.
She met Tom Waits and took on the role of nanny to his and Kathleen Brennan’s three children. Waits has since been a mentor and it was through this relationship that she decided to pursue her love of music. Tom Waits described her music as being, "like a four-sided coin. She is an old soul, like a black pearl, a good witch, or a red moon. Her music is like going swimming in a lake at night."
With Waits’ help, Hoop sent a demo containing a song called Seed of Wonder to Nic Harcourt, the host of radio show Morning Becomes Eclectic on KCRW in Santa Monica. The response was unprecedented, and it became one of the top five most requested songs on the show two months in a row.
Her first album, Kismet, was released in 2007, and was a collection of ten years’ worth of song writing. That same year, she went on tour with the likes of Mark Knopfler, Polyphonic Spree and Elbow. It was Elbow's Guy Garvey that suggested her recent relocation to Manchester where solo artists that don’t fit the mould can live a less pigeon-holed musical life.
Her second album is Hunting My Dress, released in 2009. Some exceptional songs on the list include Angel Mom, a tribute to her mother’s recent passing and Murder of Birds featuring Guy Garvey.
