Kara Jackson, an American poet, vocalist, and composer, held the esteemed position of the third U.S. National Youth Poet Laureate from 2019 to 2020.
Originating from Oak Park, Illinois, Kara Jackson attended Oak Park River Forest High School, where she actively engaged in spoken word performances. She further honed her musical talents by participating in a jazz ensemble at the Merit School of Music. Jackson's poetic prowess was recognized when she was appointed as the Youth Poet Laureate of Chicago in 2018. Notably, she showcased her talents at the Louder Than a Bomb 2018 finals and was chosen by Patricia Smith for the Literary Award.
In 2019, Jackson earned the prestigious title of United States National Youth Poet Laureate after submitting a compelling essay on poetry and democracy. Concurrently, she published her chapbook of poetry, "Bloodstone Cowboy." Pursuing her academic interests, Jackson pursued an English degree at Smith College, graduating in 2023. Her literary works have been featured in renowned publications such as Poetry, Frontier Poetry, Rookie Mag, Nimrod Literary Journal, The Lily, and Saint Heron.
Expanding her artistic horizon, Jackson ventured into the realm of music in 2019 with the release of her EP, "A Song for Every Chamber of the Heart." Her debut full-length album, "Why Does the Earth Give Us People to Love?" received widespread acclaim upon its 2023 release, earning the title of Best New Music by Pitchfork. Jackson's musical talents shine through as she contributed vocals, guitar, banjo, and piano to the album, collaborating with musicians like Kaina, Nnamdi Ogbonnaya, and Sen Morimoto on lyrics and production. Dedicated to her late friend Maya-Gabrielle Gary, who succumbed to cancer in 2016, the album serves as a poignant tribute. Jackson draws inspiration from a diverse array of musical influences including Joanna Newsom, Joni Mitchell, Megan Thee Stallion, Joan Baez, Jim Croce, and Ella Fitzgerald.
In addition to her musical endeavors, Jackson graced the stage as the opening act for Corinne Bailey Rae's Black Rainbows tour in 2023 and made appearances on Kevin Abstract's "Blanket."
