Katie Melua is a British singer-songwriter and guitarist. Katie Melua was born in Kutaisi, Georgia. In 1993, when she was eight years old, Katie’s family moved to Northern Ireland after the horrors of the Georgian Civil War.

It was at the BRIT School for Performing Arts that Katie Melua was discovered by British manager and songwriter, Mike Batt. At a showcase sponsored by the school, Melua sang a song she wrote called Faraway Voice. Katie Melua was immediately signed to Batt’s independent Dramatico recording and management company and it was with his direction that she made her first albums.

Katie Melua made her musical debut in 2003, when she released her first album, Call Off The Search. In the first five months it sold 1.8 million copies and was at the top of the UK Album Charts. Piece By Piece, her second album released in 2005, has gone platinum four times.

By 2006, Katie Melua was the UK’s best-selling female artist. Her third album, Pictures, was released in 2007 and was the last album to be made with the collaboration of Mike Batt. Her first two albums became international number ones with her songs Nine Million Bicycles and The Closest Thing To Crazy.

In 2009, Melua chose to tone things down a bit and embarked on an acoustic only American tour, performing only with guitar and piano accompaniment. She says of the experience, “sometimes it's nice to strip the songs back. That's how you know whether a song is good or not – when it can survive without much protection."

Katie Melua’s new studio album, The House, is produced by William Orbit and was released in the UK in May 2010. The new single The Flood, recorded at Air Studios in London, is featured on the album. Although William Orbit has been out of the record business for some time, Orbit claims to have been enticed when he first heard her demos. He says of their collaboration, “I was captivated by Katie’s voice when I first heard her demos in October last year and, although not having been involved in record production for some time, felt that I just had to work with her. It turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my life and a pleasure from start to finish.”
