King’s X started in 1979 when bassist Doug Pinnick and drummer Jerry Gaskill were introduced for a musical project. They met Ty Tabor the same year, became friends and bonded over a mutual interest in music. The trio formed a band called The Edge, later changing it to Sneak Preview. Sneak Preview released a self-titled EP in 1983.
In 1985, they changed their name to King’s X and started experimenting more with their style under the guidance of Sam Taylor, who was then the vice president of ZZ Top’s production company. He would later become the band’s mentor, producer and manager. They secured a contract with Megaforce Records in 1987.
Their debut album as King’s X, Out of the Silent Planet, was released in 1988. It received positive reviews from critics, as did their next two albums, Gretchen Goes to Nebraska and Faith, Hope, Love. This led to a major label deal with Atlantic Records in 1992.
King’s X toured with AC/DC in the US and Europe, as well as Living Colour. This helped raise their profile and King’s X tickets started selling in their own right. Their major label debut did not fare too well commercially, so they decided to take a different approach for the follow-up. 1994’s Dogman was supported with a King’s X tour, and then the next album, Ear Candy in 1996.
They transferred to Metal Blade Records in 1998, and released Tape Head. This album signalled a new beginning for the band, with a different sound and creative approach. Their next two albums (Please Come Home...Mr. Bulbous and Manic Moonlight) followed the same new approach, and King’s X tickets were gaining popularity.
In 2003, they released Black Like Sunday, followed by King’s X: Live all Over the Place, which was their first live album, but their last with Metal Blade Records.
In 2005, they signed to InsideOut Music and released Ogre Tones. King’s X tickets for the Ogre Tones tour sold out. In May 2008 they released another new album, XV, and toured with Extreme. King’s X tickets for their first European tour went on sale in 2009, and more are now available for their 2011 dates.
