Lankum is a contemporary Irish folk music group hailing from Dublin, Ireland, comprised of multi-instrumentalists Ian Lynch, Daragh Lynch, Cormac MacDiarmada, and Radie Peat. Originally known as Lynched, the group began as a duo with the Lynch brothers, releasing their debut album "Where Did We Go Wrong?!" in 2003. Upon returning to Ireland after international touring, they expanded into a quartet, deepening their interest in Dublin's traditional Irish music sessions and welcoming Peat and MacDiarmada into the fold.
Under the name Lankum, the quartet released albums like "Cold Old Fire" (2014) and "Between the Earth and Sky" (2017), earning accolades such as Best Folk Group at the RTÉ Folk Music Awards. Their fourth album, "The Livelong Day" (2019), further solidified their reputation, winning the RTÉ Choice Prize 2019. In 2023, their album "False Lankum" garnered widespread acclaim, earning them a nomination for the Mercury Prize.
Characterized as a blend of ambient textures and sonic intensity, Lankum's music offers a contemporary take on traditional folk, often compared to the raw energy of The Pogues. Alongside their music, members engage in side projects like Radie Peat's involvement in the band ØXN and Ian Lynch's podcast "Fire Draw Near," exploring Irish traditional music.
Despite facing controversies, including a canceled concert due to pro-Palestine statements, Lankum continues to push boundaries in the folk music scene, captivating audiences with their powerful and evocative sound.
