Laura Jurd is a British trumpeter and composer recognised for an adventurous musical approach that moves between contemporary jazz, improvisation, folk and experimental composition. Originally from Cumbria, Jurd studied at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London and has established herself as a distinctive presence within the British jazz scene. Her work combines accomplished musicianship with a willingness to explore sounds and structures beyond traditional jazz boundaries.
Jurd is particularly known for her work with Dinosaur, the acclaimed ensemble whose debut album Together, As One was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2017. Alongside her ensemble work, she has continued to develop projects that bring together improvisation, composition and influences drawn from different musical traditions. Her trumpet playing can move from delicate melodic passages to bold and exploratory improvisation, reflecting the wide creative range that characterises her work.
Live, Laura Jurd offers audiences an opportunity to hear this exploratory music develop in real time. Improvisation gives the musicians space to respond to one another, meaning compositions can gain different textures and emotional qualities in performance. For listeners interested in contemporary British jazz, inventive composition and musicians willing to move beyond established genre boundaries, a Laura Jurd concert promises an engaging encounter with one of the UK's distinctive creative voices.
