Lazuli are a French progressive rock band known for combining atmospheric rock, progressive arrangements and unusual instrumentation into a distinctive and highly expressive sound. Formed in southern France in the late 1990s, the group have developed an international following through adventurous recordings and extensive live performances. Their music brings together rock, progressive influences, world music textures and electronic elements, creating songs that can be intimate one moment and dramatically expansive the next.
One of Lazuli's defining characteristics is their use of the Leode, a unique instrument developed by Claude Leonetti after an accident affected the use of his left arm. Alongside guitars, percussion, keyboards and expressive vocals, the instrument contributes an unmistakable voice to the band's arrangements. Across numerous albums, Lazuli have built a catalogue that emphasises melody, atmosphere and experimentation while maintaining a strong emotional core.
Lazuli concerts showcase the musicianship and imagination that have earned the band a dedicated following among progressive rock audiences. Their arrangements allow individual instruments to interact in unexpected ways, while quieter passages can develop into powerful and dramatic crescendos. For listeners interested in progressive rock that combines technical creativity with emotion and atmosphere, seeing Lazuli live provides an opportunity to experience their unusual musical world at its most immediate.
