Leftfield started as a duo of Neil Barnes and Paul Daley.
“In the early-to-mid 90s, at the height of dance music's dominance, Leftfield were so cheerfully anonymous that few of the million buyers of 1995 classic Leftism would have recognised them if they'd stumbled into the pub”- The Guardian.
Their debut album, Leftism, was a groundbreaking affair, blending dub, breakbeat and techno together and narrowly missed out on the 1995 Mercury Prize, beaten by Portishead’s Dummy. Songs from the album were suited to soundtracks, and the O2 mobile phone network used the track Release the Pressure for their launch campaign. A Final Hit featured on the OST for the gritty film Trainspotting.
Their second album, Rhythm and Stealth, came out in 1999 and was also shortlisted for the Mercury Prize the in 2000. It went to number one, and featured collaborations with Roots Manuva, Afrika Bambaata and MC Cheshire Cat. A standout single on the album was Phat Planet, which was used on the iconic Guinness advertisement Surfers, featuring the white horses among the breaking waves on the shore. The song was used on soundtracks to numerous other releases, including games and television programmes, and increased demand for Leftfield tickets.
Leftfield tickets for their live performances attracted a crowd of dance music lovers, and frequently had to be shut down due to the sound reaching illegal volumes. Leftfield tickets are soon to be available for their reformation which started this summer. They headlined Creamfields in August and have added a few other festival appearances to their belts across the UK and Ireland.
