Gerard Hugh "Leo" Sayer, born on May 21, 1948, is an English-Australian singer and songwriter with a career spanning since 1973. Born in Shoreham-by-Sea, Sussex, Leo Sayer became an Australian citizen in 2009.
Leo Sayer launched his career in the early 1970s in the United Kingdom, achieving success on both sides of the Atlantic. Managed by Adam Faith, his first seven hit singles in the UK reached the Top 10, a feat first accomplished by his manager. Sayer's songs have been covered by notable artists, including Cliff Richard, Roger Daltrey, and Three Dog Night.
Born to English father Thomas E. G. Sayer and Northern Irish mother Theresa Nolan, Leo Sayer grew up in Shoreham-by-Sea. He attended St Peter's Catholic Primary School and Blessed Robert Southwell before studying commercial art and graphic design at West Sussex College of Art and Design.
Sayer's music career began co-writing songs with David Courtney, leading to the success of "Giving It All Away," which gave Roger Daltrey his first solo hit in 1973. Leo Sayer's breakthrough came with the album "Too Softhearted" in 1976, and he reached the peak of his career in 1977 with consecutive number one hits in the United States, "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing" and "When I Need You."
Despite a decade of success, Sayer faced financial setbacks due to mishandling of his business affairs by Adam Faith and a legal battle with Chrysalis to regain the publishing rights to his songs. In the late 1990s, he successfully sued his management over alleged mismanagement of his pension fund.
Sayer made a remarkable return to the UK Singles Chart in 2006 with the remix of "Thunder In My Heart." He became an Australian citizen in 2009, having lived in Sydney since 2005. In his later career, Sayer continued to release new music, with albums like "Don't Wait Until Tomorrow" (2008), "Restless Years" (2015), and "Selfie" (2019).
Leo Sayer has made appearances on various television shows, including The Muppet Show, Families at War, and Celebrity Big Brother UK. In 2015, he received a Gold Badge of Merit from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors.
