Elizabeth Catherine McAlpine, known as Lizzy McAlpine, was born on September 21, 1999, in Narberth, Pennsylvania. She is an American singer-songwriter who gained recognition for her folk-focused and folk-pop musical style, incorporating elements of jazz, pop, and R&B. Lizzy began writing music in 6th grade and attended Lower Merion High School, where she engaged in theater and sang in a co-ed a cappella group.
McAlpine pursued songwriting at Berklee College of Music in Boston but left during her junior year to dedicate herself to music. In April 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, she initiated the #BerkleeAtHome streaming concert series on Instagram. Tragically, her father passed away in mid-March 2020, inspiring the songs "Headstones and Land Mines" and "chemtrails" on her debut and second albums, respectively.
Her career took off in 2018 with the release of her debut EP, "Indigo." Lizzy's debut studio album, "Give Me a Minute," dropped in August 2020, receiving critical acclaim and becoming a streaming success on platforms like Spotify. The album earned a spot among the best albums of 2020 by the Dallas Observer, and BBC Media Centre recognized her as an "up-and-coming vocalist."
In April 2021, McAlpine released a live EP titled "When the World Stopped Moving." Her late-night debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! took place on November 22, 2021, where she performed "Erase Me."
Lizzy McAlpine's popularity soared on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, earning her the title of a "TikTok star." Her unreleased song "You Ruined the 1975" gained over 8 million views on TikTok. Building on her success, she released her second studio album, "Five Seconds Flat," on April 8, 2022. The album debuted impressively on various Billboard charts.
One of the album's tracks, "Ceilings," went viral on TikTok, contributing to its success on the Billboard Hot 100 and amassing over 230 million streams. Following the album release, Lizzy embarked on her debut headline tour in 2022, including a notable performance on NPR Music's Tiny Desk Concert in November 2022.
In 2023, McAlpine commenced a tour with 27 shows across multiple countries. On October 27, 2023, she collaborated with Irish singer Niall Horan on the duet "You Could Start a Cult."
Lizzy McAlpine's musical collaborators include notable artists such as Jacob Collier, Dodie, Tom Rosenthal, Ben Kessler, Noah Kahan, John Mayer, Finneas, and Thomas Headon. Her unique blend of genres and heartfelt songwriting has solidified her position as a rising star in the music industry.
