Lottery Winners have achieved a monumental first ever UK No.1 album with their latest record ‘Anxiety Replacement Therapy’ – their first to chart inside the Top 10.
Remarkably, it is also the fourth biggest-selling first week album release of the year so far. Beating stiff competition from the likes of Jessie Ware, Nines and The National, the indie-pop band from Leigh have pulled off a massive underdog story selling over 22.2k chart units of the album.
Comprised of frontman Thom Rylance, guitarist Rob Lally, bassist Katie Lloyd and drummer Joe Singleton, the band also hosted a pop-up shop in their hometown of Leigh throughout this week. With a swell of support from Manchester music legends, fans they’ve built from constant touring over the years, and Manchester mayor Andy Burnham all rallying around the band, they have achieved this incredible feat which is also the first ever No.1 album from Leigh.
On achieving a No.1 album with ‘Anxiety Replacement Therapy’, Thom said: ‘This is the single greatest achievement of our lives. We’re so grateful to all of our amazing fans for supporting us and making this happen. I want to thank our tiny team who have moved mountains against all of the odds. This is one for the underdogs. We’ve made it.’
The band are, as Thom told Clash this week, a ‘ 15 year overnight success story!’ They were originally signed by the late Seymour Stein – the last act to be signed by the legendary record industry exec famed for the likes of Talking Heads, The Ramones and Madonna.
Having recently completed a sold out UK tour, Lottery Winners announced their biggest headline show to date, a homecoming show at the O2 Apollo in Manchester on 1st December this year with tickets on-sale now, and further dates to follow throughout the year including at festivals such as Glastonbury and Isle of Wight.
Released on Modern Sky UK, the album features collaborations with Frank Turner, Boy George, and Shaun Ryder. Thom spoke to NME about how these collaborations came about. The band also unveiled the album with an inventive nostalgia-soaked Art Attack parody.
On the meaning behind ‘Anxiety Replacement Therapy’, Thom said: “Each of the albums in my collection are a self-help tape for me. If I listen to Paul Simon’s Graceland, it’s because I know it’ll put me in a good mood. If I play The Queen Is Dead by The Smiths, it’s because I want to embrace feeling sad. We wanted to present ‘Anxiety Replacement Therapy’ as a self-help tape for anyone playing it.”
