LUU Big Band brings the scale, colour and excitement of big band music to the stage, combining a large instrumental ensemble with the distinctive power of brass, woodwind and rhythm sections. Connected with the University of Leeds community, the ensemble provides musicians with the opportunity to perform ambitious arrangements while introducing audiences to a broad repertoire influenced by jazz, swing, funk and contemporary popular music.
Big band music is built around the interaction between musicians, with saxophones, trumpets, trombones and a rhythm section working together to create everything from sophisticated harmonies to explosive musical peaks. LUU Big Band embraces that versatility, giving audiences the chance to experience arrangements where individual solos sit alongside the impact of the complete ensemble. The result is music that can be intricate, energetic and highly entertaining.
Live performance is where a big band can truly demonstrate its range, and LUU Big Band concerts showcase the excitement created when a large group of musicians perform together. From swinging rhythms and expressive solos to bold brass passages and dynamic ensemble playing, the format offers plenty for both dedicated jazz listeners and newcomers to enjoy. A LUU Big Band concert is an opportunity to experience the richness and energy of large ensemble music in person.
