Maddy Coombs is a British saxophonist and composer whose work reflects the creativity and collaborative spirit of the contemporary UK jazz scene. Through expressive playing and an interest in original composition, Coombs brings a fresh perspective to the saxophone, combining technical musicianship with an approach that values melody, interaction and the freedom of live improvisation.
Working within contemporary jazz allows Coombs to explore the relationship between composition and spontaneous performance. Her music can draw strength from the interaction between musicians, with saxophone lines developing around rhythm, harmony and ensemble dynamics. This makes each performance an opportunity for familiar material to evolve in response to the players and the atmosphere of the room.
Live, Maddy Coombs offers audiences the chance to experience jazz in the environment where its conversational qualities become most apparent. Improvised passages, subtle changes in dynamics and the interaction between musicians create moments that exist specifically within each performance. For jazz enthusiasts and listeners interested in discovering emerging British musicians, a Maddy Coombs show provides an intimate opportunity to hear contemporary jazz taking shape in real time.
