Croatian pianist Maksim Mrvica was born in Šibenik. He took piano lessons as a child and later performed his first concert, a rendition of Haydn's Piano Concerto in C major. Mrvica then entered and won his first major competition in Zagreb in 1993.
Since 1999, he has released 13 studio albums. One of his most successful records came after he signed with EMI Classics, entitled The Piano Player (2003), in which he offered a new spin to compositions by Chopin and Handel. Since then, his international popularity has grown, with releases including 2005’s A New World (EMI), Electrik (EMI, 2006), Greatest Maksim (EMI, 2008), The Movies (Universal, 2012) and 2015’s Croatian Rhapsody (Universal), amongst others.
In addition, Mrvica's piece Exodus was used as floor music for Russian artistic gymnast Anna Pavlova at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
