Mama's Broke are a Canadian folk duo whose music draws together traditional folk, old time influences, bluegrass, blues and distinctive vocal harmonies. Formed by Amy Lou Keeler and Lisa Maria Bates, the duo have developed an atmospheric sound rooted in traditional music while bringing their own contemporary perspective to songwriting and arrangement. Their combination of voices, strings and carefully crafted melodies gives Mama's Broke a sound that can move from intimate and haunting to rhythmic and energetic.
The duo have built their reputation through extensive touring and recordings including Count the Wicked and Narrow Line. Their music explores traditional sounds without simply recreating the past, using close harmonies, original compositions and acoustic instrumentation to create songs with a strong sense of place and storytelling. This approach has introduced Mama's Broke to folk audiences internationally and established them as an intriguing presence within contemporary roots music.
Mama's Broke concerts place their musicianship and vocal chemistry at the centre of the experience. In a live setting, intricate harmonies, expressive playing and the natural intimacy of acoustic music can come into particularly sharp focus. For listeners interested in folk, Americana, bluegrass and traditional roots music, seeing Mama's Broke live offers an opportunity to experience songs that connect older musical traditions with a distinctive modern identity.
