Mark Knopfler is a singer, songwriter, guitarist and composer from Glasgow, Scotland. Knopfler is highly respected for his brand of finger style guitar playing. Rolling Stone Magazine ranked him number 24 on their list of 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.
Mark Knopfler and his family moved to England when he was around seven years old. It was here that he and his younger brother became interested in music. One of his first guitars was a twin-pick-up Höfner Super Solid and he was influenced early on by the likes of Chet Atkins, Elvis Presley, Django Reinhardt, Scotty Moore and B.B King. He now claims to own around 70 guitars of which he favours the Fender Telecaster and Stratocaster styles.
In 1977, Mark Knopfler and his brother David co-founded the musical group Dire Straits. Knopfler is possibly best known for his affiliation with the band to which he contributed lead guitar and lead vocals. Dire Straits have sold in excess of 120 million albums to date. Their hits include Sultans of Swing, Money for Nothing and Walk of Life.
Mark Knopfler is also a gifted film composer and has had a highly successful career. He has written the musical scores for such films as The Princess Bride, Wag the Dog, Last Exit to Brooklyn, Local Hero and Metroland.
Knopfler has won four Grammys, an Edison Award for Outstanding Achievements in the Music Industry, received an Honorary Doctor of Music at several universities and has a dinosaur named after him (Masiakasaurus knopfleri) because the scientists were listening to his music while they were digging for fossils.
His work as a solo artist has been prolific and Knopfler has worked with many musicians throughout his career. His fifth solo studio album, Get Lucky, was co-produced by long-time collaborators Guy Fletcher and Chuck Ainlay. It is an album of his original song writing that combines elements of blues and folk music. Get Lucky has an autobiographical flavour; it is tinged with reminiscences of Knopfler’s early days and his experiences with the people he came across. As he describes it, “Get Lucky came from him and other travelling characters I went on to meet in places I'd find myself working short-term, like farms, warehouses, building sites, before I got lucky with my songs."
