Martin John Kemp (born October 10, 1961) is an English musician and actor, widely recognized as the bassist for the new wave band Spandau Ballet and for his role as Steve Owen in the popular soap opera EastEnders. He is the younger brother of Gary Kemp, also a member of Spandau Ballet and an actor.
Born in Islington, north London, to Frank and Eileen Kemp, Martin attended Rotherfield Junior School and later Central Foundation Boys' School. Alongside his brother Gary, he joined the Anna Scher Theatre drama club at the age of seven, where he appeared in several TV shows, including Jackanory and Dixon of Dock Green. After leaving school at 16, he began an apprenticeship in a print factory before shifting his focus to music.
Martin's music career began when he replaced the bassist in his brother's band, the Gentry, which was later renamed Spandau Ballet. The band achieved significant success during the New Romantic era, with hits like "True" and their participation in the Band Aid project. Spandau Ballet reunited in 2009 for a world tour.
Martin and Gary Kemp starred in the 1990 film The Krays, portraying the notorious gangster twins, which received critical acclaim. In the 1990s, Martin moved to Los Angeles, appearing in TV series like The Outer Limits and Highlander: The Series, and films such as Waxwork II: Lost in Time.
After returning to the UK, Martin joined EastEnders in 1998, becoming one of the best-known faces on British television. He won multiple awards for his role as Steve Owen, including three TV Quick Awards and a National Television Award.
In recent years, Martin has worked with his family on various projects. In 2019, he and his wife Shirlie released an album, In the Swing of It. In 2020, he co-hosted Martin & Roman's Sunday Best! with his son Roman, and they published a relationship advice book, It's a Love Story. Martin has continued to appear in TV series and campaigns, including a 2021 government campaign promoting COVID-19 vaccinations. In January 2023, Martin and Shirlie appeared as "Cat & Mouse" on The Masked Singer
