Michael Kiwanuka is a British singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist known for his soulful blend of folk, rock, and R&B. Born in Muswell Hill, London, in 1987 to Ugandan immigrant parents, Kiwanuka grew up with a passion for music that spans various genres, from soul legends like Marvin Gaye and Otis Redding to modern rock icons such as Radiohead and The Beatles. He studied jazz music at the University of Westminster and began his career as a session guitarist before stepping into the spotlight as a solo artist.

Kiwanuka's breakout moment came with the release of his debut album, Home Again (2012), which earned him critical acclaim for its introspective lyrics and rich, vintage sound. The album was nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize, establishing him as one of the most promising talents in British music. His follow-up album, Love & Hate (2016), propelled him to even greater heights, debuting at No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart. The record featured the hit single “Black Man in a White World,” a powerful anthem about identity and race, and was praised for its bold fusion of soul, rock, and orchestral elements.

In 2019, Kiwanuka released his self-titled third album, Kiwanuka, which further cemented his status as a leading voice in contemporary soul. The album won the 2020 Mercury Prize and received widespread acclaim for its deeply personal storytelling, blending lush instrumentation with themes of self-acceptance, mental health, and political consciousness. Standout tracks like "You Ain't the Problem" and "Hero" showcase his ability to connect with listeners on a deeply emotional level.
