Mike Batt is a singer-songwriter and producer from Britain. He is perhaps best known for producing the Wombles act and discovering Katie Melua. Born in Southampton, England, the producer attended school and college until the age of 18; he then applied for a job at Liberty and joined their production team, working his way up through the company until achieving a role responsible for artists and repertoire. In the early 1970s, his personal life had developed with a wife and children, all while trying to record a rock album.
Having spent a lot of money on the venture he was contacted by a children’s television producer to create the music theme for the Wombles. Instead of accepting the job and claiming the fee, he asked for the rights to the characters and to enter them into musical production. This venture was his major break and to this day Mike Batt is still known and renowned for his production of the Wombles (at the time it was a TV series and book for children).
The Wombles gave Batt four gold certified albums and eight hit singles. After finally receiving critical recognition for the work he did, he started to climb the musical ladder and collaborated with many other artists.
He went back to his original dream of producing music in his own name after the success of the Wombles. The first was Lilac Wine for Elkie Brooks in 1978, which was a roaring success. For the animated film Watership Down he produced the song Bright Eyes which was performed by Art Garfunkel, and again the record was a huge hit around the United Kingdom and Europe.
In the 1980s Batt released his own self recorded albums, extending his fame to Australia, but on return he still continued to produce and produced an additional three top ten hits including one for Cliff Richard. He continued his work with television animations and started working with even bigger stars including Ozzy Osbourne, Bonnie Tyler and Gary Glitter.
