What Is Miss Saigon About?
Set in Saigon in 1975,
Miss Saigon follows Kim, a young Vietnamese woman who meets Chris, an American GI, in the final days of the Vietnam War. Their relationship blossoms into love, but when Saigon falls, the pair are separated.
Kim is left to survive and raise their son, Tam, while Chris returns to America and begins a new life. Three years later, their worlds collide again, forcing them to confront the choices and consequences of the past.
Along the way,
Miss Saigon delivers some of musical theatre’s best-known songs, from Kim’s yearning
‘The Movie in My Mind’ to the romantic
‘Last Night of the World’ and the Engineer’s larger-than-life
‘The American Dream’.
From Madama Butterfly to West End Classic
Following the success of
Les Misérables,
Claude-Michel Schönberg and
Alain Boublil turned their attention to a new story, inspired by a photograph of a Vietnamese mother saying goodbye to her child. The musical also draws on
Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, reimagining its tragic romance against the backdrop of the Vietnam War.
Miss Saigon opened in London in 1989 before heading to Broadway in 1991, where it ran for more than a decade. Since then, the show has toured extensively, with major productions across the UK and internationally, including a celebrated West End revival in 2014 and Broadway revival in 2017.
The role of Kim has become particularly iconic, with
Lea Salonga, who originated the part in London and Broadway, winning a Tony Award for her performance. She has since been followed by performers including
Eva Noblezada, who starred in both the 2014 London revival and its Broadway transfer. The 2014 production was also filmed for the cinema as
Miss Saigon: The 25th Anniversary Performance, bringing the show to a whole new audience.
