Morrissey is one of the most influential and controversial figures in British music. Known first as the frontman of The Smiths, he launched a storied solo career in 1988 with Viva Hate, exploring themes of alienation, yearning, identity, and critique, often with literary flair and sharp intellect. Over decades his voice, lyrics, and public persona have earned him both passionate loyalty and strong debate.
His solo albums include Viva Hate, Your Arsenal, Vauxhall and I, You Are the Quarry, Ringleader of the Tormentors, Years of Refusal, World Peace Is None of Your Business, Low in High School, California Son, and I Am Not a Dog on a Chain. These records mix rock, indie, orchestral pop, crooners and covers, always bearing his distinctive lyrical voice and emotional intensity.
In 2023 Morrissey released I Am Not a Dog on a Chain, his thirteenth solo studio album. The lead single “Bobby, Don’t You Think They Know?” features Thelma Houston. The album was recorded with producer Joe Chiccarelli. Morrissey also released a cover of Roy Orbison’s “It’s Over” which reached number one on the UK Vinyl Singles Chart.
He has also recorded an album titled Without Music the World Dies. The tracklist includes songs such as The Night Pop Dropped, Boulevard, Without Music The World Dies, Many Icebergs Ago, among others. At the moment this album has not received a full commercial release due to label and contractual issues.
Another album, Bonfire of Teenagers, was completed between 2020 and 2021. It was announced for release but remains unreleased following his departure from Capitol Records. Morrissey maintains that the album is being delayed due to concerns over content and opposition from music industry institutions.
Morrissey’s live shows are intense and deeply emotional. He often performs tracks spanning his long career, including Smiths classics, solo favourites, and new material. Audiences expect dramatic vocals, intimate moments, and grand gestures — a performance that feels both personal and theatrical.
In 2025 Morrissey continues to tour internationally, with dates across Europe and North America. His shows remain high in demand despite controversy and delays in releasing some projects. His community of fans remains deeply engaged, anticipating each announcement, each performance, and each new recording.
