Mykki Blanco, born on April 2, 1986, in Orange County, California, is a multifaceted artist known as an American rapper, performance artist, poet, and activist. Raised in a family with diverse influences, her father, Michael Quattlebaum Sr., transitioned from an IT specialist to a psychic, while her mother, Deborah Butler, worked as a paralegal. Blanco's parents divorced when she was two years old, and she spent her early years in San Mateo County, California, before relocating to Raleigh, North Carolina, where she attended Enloe High School.
At the age of 15, Blanco founded the performance collective Paint In Consciousness Experimental Theater, earning an Indies Spirit Award for her work. She embarked on a journey that led her to New York City at 16, later spending time in California. Blanco won a full scholarship to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago but dropped out after two semesters in 2006. She also briefly attended Parsons School of Design in New York City.
Blanco's artistic journey includes a book of poetry titled "From the Silence of Duchamp to the Noise of Boys," published in 2011. In 2012, she made her musical debut with the EP "Mykki Blanco & the Mutant Angels," followed by the mixtape "Cosmic Angel: The Illuminati Prince/ss" in November 2012. Subsequent releases include the EP "Betty Rubble: The Initiation" (2013), the mixtape "Gay Dog Food" (2014), and her debut album, "Mykki," released on September 16, 2016.
Throughout her career, Blanco has collaborated with notable artists such as Kanye West, Teyana Taylor, and Blood Orange. She contributed ad-libs on Teyana Taylor's "WTP" and collaborated with Kanye West on the track "Bye Bye Baby." Blanco's artistic persona began as a teenage girl character on YouTube in 2010, evolving into a musical and performance art piece. Influenced by artists like Lil' Kim, GG Allin, Kathleen Hanna, and others, she is recognized as one of hip hop's queer pioneers.
Blanco challenges conventional labels and stereotypes, expressing discomfort with being categorized solely as "gay rap" or "queer rap." She distances herself from being labeled a drag artist, emphasizing her background in punk and Riot Grrrl. Blanco continually evolves her aesthetic, aligning it with her personal identity, and her artistic influences include Marilyn Manson, Yoko Ono, and the riot grrrl movement. Despite her complex and genre-defying style, Blanco is committed to authenticity and has been involved in activism, including presenting Madonna with the GLAAD Advocate for Change award in 2019.
