"Definitely Maybe" is the debut studio album by the English rock band Oasis, released by Creation Records on 29 August 1994. The album was recorded after a series of challenges with producers, leading to the departure of Dave Batchelor. The group, led by Noel Gallagher, faced difficulties at Monnow Valley Studio and Sawmills Studio before enlisting Owen Morris, who mixed the album at Johnny Marr's studio in Manchester.
Oasis, formed in 1991, booked Monnow Valley Studio to record the album in late 1993. However, the sessions with producer Dave Batchelor were deemed unsatisfactory, and Batchelor was fired. The band, in desperation, contacted Owen Morris, who eventually worked on mixing the album at Johnny Marr's studio.
"Definitely Maybe" was an instant success in the UK and became the fastest-selling debut album in British music history at the time. It went straight to number one on the UK Albums Chart and achieved 8× platinum certification for sales exceeding 2.4 million units. The album was also successful in the United States, certified platinum by the RIAA, and sold over 8.5 million copies worldwide. It is considered a seminal entry in the Britpop scene and has received widespread critical acclaim.
The recording process faced challenges, including sessions with Dave Batchelor at Monnow Valley Studio, which were unsatisfactory due to technical issues and a lack of direction. The band re-recorded the album at Sawmills Studio in Cornwall, but the results were still deemed unsatisfactory. Owen Morris was eventually enlisted to mix the album at Johnny Marr's studio, resulting in a dynamic and successful final product.
"Definitely Maybe" is celebrated for its optimistic themes and rejection of the negative outlook of much of the grunge music of the time. It played a pivotal role in the revitalization of British pop/rock music in the 1990s and is regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time. In 2006, it was voted the greatest album of all time by NME readers, and in 2020, Rolling Stone ranked it at No. 217 on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
