Paul David Heaton (born 9 May 1962) is an English singer-songwriter known for his roles as the frontman of the Housemartins and The Beautiful South. The Housemartins gained popularity with hits like "Happy Hour" and the UK number one "Caravan of Love" in 1986. After the band's disbandment in 1988, Heaton formed The Beautiful South, achieving commercial success with their debut album in 1989. The band enjoyed numerous hits throughout the 1990s, including the number-one single "A Little Time". They disbanded in 2007.
Heaton embarked on a solo career, releasing three albums before collaborating with former Beautiful South vocalist Jacqui Abbott in 2014 on the album What Have We Become?. This successful partnership continued, producing four more albums: Wisdom, Laughter and Lines (2015), Crooked Calypso (2017), Manchester Calling (2020), and N.K-Pop (2022).
Born in Bromborough, Cheshire, Heaton moved to Sheffield at age four, where he developed a passion for football, supporting Sheffield United. He later moved to Chipstead, Surrey, and formed his first band, Tools Down, before hitch-hiking around Europe and settling in Hull in 1983, where he formed the Housemartins.
The Housemartins blended Marxist politics with Christianity in their lyrics, achieving significant success before splitting up. The Beautiful South, formed in 1988, released multiple albums and compilations, with notable hits like "Song for Whoever" and "You Keep It All In". Despite their success, they split in 2007 due to "musical similarities."
Heaton's solo ventures included the albums Fat Chance (2001), The Cross-Eyed Rambler (2008), and Acid Country (2010). In 2011, he wrote and performed The 8th, a musical piece endorsed by the Manchester International Festival.
Reuniting with Abbott in 2013, Heaton's subsequent albums received critical acclaim, with Manchester Calling and N.K-Pop reaching number one on the UK Albums Chart. Despite health issues forcing Abbott to step back from touring in 2022, Heaton continued to perform, maintaining his reputation as a beloved figure in British music.
