Pedro the Lion was formed by David Bazan in 1995. The band's name comes from a character intended for their first album. Their debut EP, Whole, was released in 1997, with Bazan playing nearly every instrument, a pattern continued on their first two albums, It's Hard to Find a Friend (1998) and Winners Never Quit (2000).
Winners was the band's first concept album. Although Bazan initially decided not to continue writing concept albums, Control (2002) ended up with a narrative link criticizing American capitalism, influenced by the 1999 WTO protests. Casey Foubert joined to play bass and co-wrote two tracks.
Achilles Heel (2004) marked the beginning of Bazan's collaboration with TW Walsh, focusing on simpler songwriting. In January 2006, Pedro the Lion split amicably, with Bazan pursuing solo work and Walsh focusing on his band, The Soft Drugs. Bazan's solo LP Curse Your Branches was released in 2009.
The Pedro the Lion catalog was remastered and reissued in 2012. Bazan also joined Overseas, releasing their debut album in 2013. In 2017, Bazan reformed Pedro the Lion, initially performing their existing catalog with new material to follow.
