Pete Philly & Perquisite is a Dutch hip-hop duo hailing from Amsterdam, comprising Pedro Philip Monzón (born May 28, 1980, in Aruba) as the MC/vocalist and Pieter "Perquisite" Perquin (born 1982 in Amsterdam) as the cellist, producer, and composer. Their music is a unique blend of hip-hop infused with elements of jazz, broken beat, and soul. The duo is renowned for their captivating live performances, often accompanied by DJ PCM (Misha van der Winkel), Remco Keijzer on saxophone, EWI, and flute, Kasper Kalf on double-bass, and Ruben Hein on keys.
Before joining forces, Pete Philly and Perquisite had established individual musical careers. Pete Philly was associated with funk formation Gotcha! and hip-hop group Nicotine, while Perquisite released two solo EPs on his label Unexpected Records, collaborating with jazz musicians like Benjamin Herman and David Kweksilber.
Their collaboration commenced in 2002, leading to the release of their debut EP "The Mindstate EP" in January 2004, which received critical acclaim. This success inspired them to expand it into their debut album "Mindstate," released in 2005. The album garnered international recognition and solidified their fanbase with hits like "Mellow" and "Grateful." Pete Philly & Perquisite won several awards and nominations, including an Essent Award and a Zilveren Harp.
Following the "Mindstate" tour, they released "Remindstate," a remixed version of their debut album, in 2007. Their second album, "Mystery Repeats," dropped in 2007, topping the Dutch album charts and producing successful singles like "Time Flies" and "Mystery Repeats." The duo embarked on extensive tours across Europe and Japan, earning accolades and nominations along the way.
After a successful run of more than 300 shows, Pete Philly & Perquisite parted ways in 2009, concluding with the "Final Celebration Tour."
However, in April 2023, they announced a reunion for a one-time show at AFAS Live, Amsterdam, scheduled for November 17, 2023, hinting at new music in the works.
