Peter John Kay (born 2 July 1973) is an English comedian, actor, writer, and director. He has created and starred in numerous television and film projects and has authored three books.
Born and raised in Farnworth, Lancashire, Kay attended Mount Saint Joseph School, leaving with a GCSE in art. His father, Michael, was an engineer who passed away before Kay's career took off. His mother, Deirdre, is an Irish Catholic from County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, and Kay was raised in her faith.
Kay worked various jobs, including in a toilet roll factory, Netto supermarket, video rental shop, Manchester Arena, cash and carry, cinema, petrol station, and bingo hall, often getting sacked for not taking things seriously. These experiences inspired episodes for his show That Peter Kay Thing. Initially, he began a degree in Drama, Theatre Studies, and English Literature at the University of Liverpool but switched to a Higher National Diploma in Media Performance at the University of Salford.
Kay started performing stand-up comedy part-time, winning the North West Comedian of the Year award and Channel 4's So You Think You're Funny contest in 1997. He was nominated for a Perrier Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 1998. His rising profile led to co-writing and starring in That Peter Kay Thing for Channel 4 in 2000. This success spawned the sitcom Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights, running for two series from 2001 to 2002, and the spin-off Max and Paddy's Road to Nowhere in 2004.
In 2005, Kay recorded a promotional video miming Tony Christie's 1971 hit "(Is This the Way to) Amarillo" for Comic Relief, which became the UK's best-selling single that year. In 2008, he co-wrote and starred in the parody Britain's Got the Pop Factor... and Possibly a New Celebrity Jesus Christ Soapstar Superstar Strictly on Ice. As the fictional character Geraldine McQueen, he released "The Winner's Song," which reached number 2 in the UK singles chart.
Kay's 2010–2011 stand-up tour set a Guinness World Record as the most successful ever, selling over 1.2 million tickets. He co-wrote and starred in the BBC sitcom Peter Kay's Car Share, which aired from 2015 to 2018 and starred in the 2015 sitcom Cradle to Grave. In 2016, he won the BAFTA TV Award for Best Male Comedy Performance, the BAFTA TV Award for Best Scripted Comedy, and the National Television Award for Best Comedy for Car Share. Kay received an honorary doctorate from the University of Salford the same year.
Peter Kay is celebrated for his unique comedic style and significant contributions to British comedy, maintaining a prominent presence in the entertainment industry with his versatile talents as a comedian, actor, writer, and director.
