Polly Jean Harvey MBE, born on October 9, 1969, is an acclaimed English singer-songwriter known for her versatility with various musical instruments. Her journey began in 1988 when she joined the local band Automatic Dlamini as a vocalist, guitarist, and saxophonist, under the mentorship of John Parish, who would become a long-term collaborator. Forming her own trio, PJ Harvey, in 1991, she released two highly praised albums, "Dry" (1992) and "Rid of Me" (1993), before transitioning to a solo career.
Throughout her solo career, spanning since 1995, Harvey has released ten studio albums, collaborating with renowned musicians like John Parish, Mick Harvey, and Flood. Notably, she's the only artist to win the Mercury Prize twice, in 2001 and 2011, for "Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea" and "Let England Shake," respectively. Her influence extends to multiple Grammy Award nominations and recognition from Rolling Stone, which listed several of her albums among the greatest of all time.
Outside of her solo work, Harvey has engaged in various collaborations and projects, including scoring films, composing for stage productions, and contributing to television soundtracks. In 2024, her original songs featured prominently in the stage adaptation of Charles Dickens' "Our Mutual Friend," titled "London Tide," directed by Ian Rickson.
