Reverend and the Makers are an English rock band from Sheffield, fronted by Jon “The Reverend” McClure. Since forming in the early 2000s, they have become known for their blend of indie rock, dance-rock, electronica, and socially aware lyrics. Their vibrant live performances and willingness to experiment have earned them a loyal following across the UK.
Their debut album The State of Things (2007) made a strong impact, spawning the UK top ten single Heavyweight Champion of the World. Their second album A French Kiss in the Chaos (2009) led to supporting Oasis on one of their final tours. Subsequent albums such as @Reverend_Makers (2012), ThirtyTwo (2014), Mirrors (2015), and The Death of a King (2017) saw the band navigate through electronic, dance, folk, and rock influences, each album expanding their sound while keeping their direct, engaging style intact.
In 2023 they released Heatwave in the Cold North, which became their first Top 10 album in 16 years, peaking at number six on the UK album charts. Singles from the album like Heatwave in the Cold North, High, Problems, and A Letter to My 21 Year Old Self drew praise for their soulful, reflective, yet anthemic qualities, and signified a revitalised creative energy for the band.
Looking forward to 2026, Reverend and the Makers announce their eighth studio album Is This How Happiness Feels?, due for release on 24 April through Distiller Records. The album includes recent singles such as Haircut (featuring Vicky McClure), Late Night Phone Call, and the new track UFO. Having described the album as a “labour of love” and “a joyous triumph,” Jon McClure says it may surprise even longtime fans with its depth and freshness.
On stage, Reverend and the Makers deliver compelling shows that mix classic hits with new material, creating an inclusive atmosphere full of energy and emotion. They are known for combining big-chorus moments with thoughtful lyricism and a live sound that seamlessly brings together rock, soul, and dance elements.
In 2025 the band are set for headline shows including their biggest ever at Sheffield’s Don Valley Bowl, plus summer festival appearances. Audiences can expect both fan favourites and new tracks from Is This How Happiness Feels?, performed with the passion and dynamism that has defined their career.
