Sam Smith rose to fame in October 2012 when he featured on Disclosure's breakthrough single "Latch", which peaked at number eleven on the UK chart. His subsequent feature—on Naughty Boy's "La La La"—earned him his first number-one single in May 2013.
In December 2013, Smith was nominated for the 2014 BRIT Critics' Choice Award and the BBC's Sound of 2014 poll; both of which he went on to win.
He is scheduled to release his debut studio album, In the Lonely Hour, on 26 May 2014 via Capitol Records. The lead single, "Lay Me Down", was released prior to "La La La". The second single, "Money on My Mind", was released on 16 February.
He is the cousin of singer Lily Allen and actor Alfie Allen.

My partner and I have between us seen a number of artists at the Apollo Hammersmith /eventim and it is one of our most favoured venues. However we came to see Mr Sam Smith on 7th November and were bitterly disappointed with the quality of the sound. We were only standing in the stalls fairly close to the back, in front of the bar and it may have been our location with the circles being directly above us but even still, the sound reverberated in our chests in an annoying and not pleasant manner. ...

This was our fourth visit to this venue and all of the concerts have been memorable for very different reasons.
I prefer the more intimate shows, there is a good atmosphere there only problem is always being seated at the very back so no close ups. The concert was very good. Sam Smith is an extremely talented song writer and has a superb voice. There are no fancy gimmicks or backing music . I liked the way he introduced himself and his songs .
