Hailing from Newcastle, the duo producer and DJ Smoove (Jonathan Watson) and soulful frontman John Turrellh ave been at the forefront of the UK’s contemporary funk and soul revival since their formation in 2009.
Their debut album Antique Soul (2009) introduced their signature blend of northern grit and retro-inspired rhythms, featuring standout tracks such as I Can’t Give You Up and You Don’t Know. It quickly earned them a devoted following and airplay from BBC Radio DJs including Craig Charles, who became one of their most vocal champions.
Subsequent albums such as Eccentric Audio (2011), Broken Toys (2014), and Crown Posada (2016) solidified their reputation for crafting smart, danceable tunes that fuse funk, soul, and electronica with strong storytelling. Their sound reflects working-class life, hope, and resilience, delivered through Turrell’s rich, emotive vocals and Smoove’s expert production and sampling.
More recent releases, including Stratos Bleu (2020) and Red Ellen (2023), show the band continuing to evolve with fresh electronic influences while maintaining their trademark authenticity. Red Ellen, in particular, drew praise for its political edge and musical sophistication, confirming their place as one of the most inventive and consistent acts in UK funk and soul.
