Sonna are an American instrumental band associated with the post rock and experimental music scenes, known for creating patient, atmospheric compositions where texture and gradual development take priority over conventional song structures. Formed in Baltimore, Maryland, the group became part of an influential period of independent music where artists explored the possibilities of instrumental rock through repetition, restraint and carefully layered sound.
Sonna's music is characterised by interlocking guitars, subtle rhythmic patterns and compositions that develop gradually rather than rushing towards obvious climaxes. Their recordings offer a detailed listening experience, with individual musical elements accumulating to create an expansive atmosphere. This approach places Sonna within the broader world of post rock while giving their work a thoughtful identity of its own.
In concert, Sonna's patient compositions can become especially immersive, with repetition and volume revealing details that may feel more subtle on record. The live environment allows audiences to become absorbed in slowly changing patterns, guitar textures and the collective focus of the musicians. For fans of instrumental rock, experimental music and atmospheric post rock, seeing Sonna live offers an opportunity to experience their music on a larger and more physical scale.
