Spiral Skies are a Swedish rock band from Stockholm, formed in 2014 by musicians who shared a passion for the sound and spirit of classic 1970s rock and heavy metal. From the beginning, the group developed a distinctive style that blends psychedelic rock, doom, folk, heavy metal and fuzz. Rather than fitting neatly into one genre, Spiral Skies describe their music as “on other planets kinda rock,” an apt description of their atmospheric and otherworldly approach.
The band began as an instrumental rehearsal-room project before vocalist Frida Eurenius joined in 2014. Her powerful and expressive voice became an important part of Spiral Skies' identity, adding a dramatic dimension to the band's heavy, psychedelic arrangements. The core lineup has included Frida on vocals, Eric Sandberg on bass, Daniel Bäckman on drums, and guitarists Jonas Lyander and Dan Svanljung.
Spiral Skies' early music established the foundations of their sound. Their first single, The Wizard's Ball, appeared in 2014 and helped introduce the band to listeners beyond Stockholm. In February 2015, they released their debut EP, A Queendom to Come. Recorded in their rehearsal room, the EP captured the raw energy of the band's developing sound and featured songs including Left Is Right and Right Is Left Behind, The Final Set, and Labyrinth of the Mind.
The group continued developing its music with the 2016 release Event Horizon, followed by a series of singles and recordings that expanded their psychedelic and doom-influenced character. Their first full-length album, Blues for a Dying Planet, arrived in May 2018. The record brought together heavy riffs, swirling psychedelic textures, melodic passages and Frida's commanding vocals. Its songs often explore dark, mystical and apocalyptic ideas, giving the album a theatrical atmosphere without losing the warmth of classic rock.
Following the album, Spiral Skies released the Cult single in 2019. The release continued their fascination with heavy psychedelic sounds while revisiting The Final Set. Their second full-length album, Death Is But a Door, followed in 2022, demonstrating the band's continued interest in combining vintage influences with their own modern interpretation of psychedelic doom rock.
Although rooted in the traditions of classic rock, Spiral Skies have developed a sound that feels deliberately timeless. Their music draws from the psychedelic freedom of the 1970s while incorporating the weight of doom and heavy metal, touches of folk, prominent fuzz and an element of theatrical mystery. Comparisons to artists from the classic psychedelic and occult-rock traditions are understandable, but Spiral Skies remain recognizable through their combination of expansive arrangements and Frida's distinctive vocal presence.
Live performance is another important part of the band's identity. Spiral Skies have become known for intense, atmospheric and visually engaging shows, using their music to create an immersive experience rather than simply reproducing their studio recordings. Their approach has helped them build an international audience while retaining strong connections to Stockholm's rock and metal scene.
More than a decade after their formation, Spiral Skies continue to occupy a distinctive space between psychedelic rock, doom and classic heavy music. Their journey from a Stockholm rehearsal-room project to an internationally recognized cult rock band reflects a commitment to atmosphere, experimentation and old-school songwriting. With their mixture of heavy riffs, hypnotic melodies, mystical themes and charismatic vocals, Spiral Skies have created a musical world that feels both familiar and strangely distant.
