The Stone Temple Pilots formed in the early 90s, when Scott Weiland (vocals), Robert DeLeo (bass guitar and vocals), brother Dean DeLeo (guitar) and Eric Kretz (drums and other percussion) decided to create a band to make music that they couldn’t hear anywhere else. Their first album, Core, was a huge success, and they sold nearly 40 million records worldwide during the 90s.
Many fans are familiar with some of their many top 10 singles, including Plush, from their first album, and, Purple, from the 1994 album of the same name. In the 90s they toured with Rage Against The Machine and Megadeth, and made their first appearance on MTV with their MTV Unplugged session. They debuted the song Big Empty on that show, winning them many new fans. Fans of Rolling Stone magazine voted them Best New Band in 1994, and in that same year they won a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance for the song Plush.
It was after these highs that things started to spiral out of control. Vocalist Scott Weiland was arrested for drug possession, and shortly thereafter the Pilots broke up. In less than two years they were back together again recording their third album in San Diego, California. Tiny Music. . . Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop, was released in 1996 to great fan approval. The Stone Temple Pilots tour for the album was cut short however, due to Weiland’s relapse with drugs and his confinement in a medical facility to break his addiction. The band made another stab at touring, but that also had to be cut short in early 1997 when Weiland checked himself into another drug treatment facility; voluntarily that time.
Each band member went his separate ways for a while, but they came together again in 1999 with the release of No. 4. In 1991 the band released their fifth Album, Shangri-La Dee Da, in 2001, and had plans for a sixth album for 2003, but dissension between the band members doomed that project. Once again each went their separate ways but came together again in 2008 for a North American tour, and to play at several music festivals.
The Virgin Mobile Festival and New Orleans’ Voodoo Experience began another string of very successful performances, with Stone Temple Pilots tickets selling out in a very short time. The hiatus seemed to do the band good – 18 new songs have been written and 12 of them are planned for a new album. Their UK tour will take them through the UK, as well as through Germany, France, the Netherlands and beyond. Grab some Stone Temple Pilots tickets today and plan to rock your socks off!
