The 88 were formed in 2002 by Keith Slettedahl (vocals and guitar), Adam Merrin (keyboards), Todd O’Keefe (bass) and Anthony Zimmitti (drums/percussion). They are based in Los Angeles, and took their name from, “88 keys on the piano. . . 88 constellations in the sky”. They are known for their high-energy live performances, with The 88 tickets being hot commodities on the L.A. nightclub scene. Promoting themselves as a combination of old school/new school rock and indie rock, their music has already developed a wide following and has been used on several television shows.
Compared favourably to the sounds of David Bowie and Marc Bolan, they fuse the rock style of these classic musicians with a newer, funkier sound that is the band’s own. The band have performed live on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and Last Call with Carson Daly. Their songs have been heard on television shows including, The OC, Grey’s Anatomy, and Laguna Beach.
They have also done some movie work already, with their song, All ‘Cause of You, used in the films You, Me and Dupree, Cheese and Crackers, and Ira and Abby. They have also recorded a cover of Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Queen, for the film Failure to Launch. The number and variety of their television and movie credits is already astounding - even more so when you consider the short time these four musicians have been together.
The 88 have opened for Smashing Pumpkins, The Zombies, The B-52s, Gary Jules and others, as well as performing with Tenacious D, and performing for two straight years with Lance Armstrong’s Tour of Hope.
Displaying their youth and willingness to try new things, The 88 became the first band to record a track entirely on an iPhone, which they promptly uploaded to iTunes. The song was named Love Is The Thing, and within 24 hours became the band’s most downloaded song.
The band really shine in concert, and if you like what you have heard on a downloaded song then The 88 tickets should be at the top of your ‘to buy’ list. The band really come alive at a concert, seemingly feeding off the energy of the audience and transforming that energy directly into their vocals and instruments. Their shows have been described as ‘dynamic’, but that still does not do them justice. Their appeal is universal, their music a mix of classic and indie rock that will never cease to please and amaze. Buy The 88 tickets to see what everyone’s talking about.
