Born out of the rural remnants of Ottawa, The Acorn are an independent folk rock band, initially formed in 2003. With seven albums released under their name since the band started performing, they can be considered as one of the most progressive indie bands in Canada, and definitely one of the most prolific in terms of music output. The main songwriter, as well as vocalist and guitarist, is Rolf Klausener, and he is backed by Howie Tsui on the guitar, Jeff Debutte on the bass, and Keiko Devaux on the keyboard. The band was initially formed by Rolf in 2002 when he began recording his music at home, the end result of which became their first release, the electric-acoustic tribute album to the region, called The Pink Ghosts, which would go on to sell many Acorn tickets locally.
Once the band got out on the road, they began travelling as often as possible, supporting themselves by independent touring. By 2005 they had managed to emerge into the growing independent Canadian music scene and established a solid reputation as a band that people wanted to see again and again. Eventually, after a few more independent releases, the band were signed to an independent record company out of Toronto, Paper Bag Records. With the support of a label behind them, they recorded their first significantly ambitious album, Glory Hope Mountain: to date it is their most critically acclaimed album. It earned The Acorn a good enough reputation to tour Europe and North America extensively, selling thousands of Acorn tickets. After two years of heavy touring, the band headed up to a cottage in Northern Québec to begin work on their latest album, No Ghost, which was released in June of 2010, having been recorded at Montréal's Treatment Room Studios.
No Ghost is considered one of their most ambitious albums to date, with the music being created after the five friends lived together alone in the woods in the last summer of the first decade of the 21st century. The band are currently touring to promote their latest release with The Acorn No Ghost tour tickets on sale throughout Canada. The venues are the Ottawa Folk Festival, the Hillside Music Festival, the Big Time Out Music Festival, the Wolf Island Music Festival, and a number of other independent venues throughout their home country. A North American tour is expected to follow at some point.
