The Bees (known as A Band of Bees in America, due to a rights issue over the name) began as a duo of Paul Butler and Alan Fletcher. Both are from the Isle of Wight. They recorded their debut album, Sunshine Hit Me, in a home studio in a garden shed at Paul’s parents’ house.
The record reflected their musical interests, blending 60s freakbeat and psychedelia with 70s power pop, and got a prestigious Mercury nomination in 2002. Both Paul and Alan are avid record collectors and their extensive collections both helped to inspire the album, with music from British rock to American soul. This wide range of influences has ensured their appeal to a broad range of audiences, and Bees tickets are popular whenever they tour.
The Mecury nomination and subsequent critical acclaim led to Paul and Alan enlisting more musicians and songwriters to form a proper band. They then toured extensively as a sextet, with Bees tickets becoming more popular.
After the Bees returned from the road, they started recording a new album, this time in the prestigious Abbey Road studios. Free the Bees was the product, and it was out in summer 2004 on the Virgin imprint. The album garnered lots of attention when it was released and led to comparisons with the Beatles, Small Faces, The Byrds, Donovan, The Kinks, The Temptations and Pink Floyd.
A Minha Menina from the album Sunshine Hit Me appeared in a Citroën advert and a Magner’s Cider advert. Chicken Payback and Wash in the Rain, from Free the Bees, were featured in Sure ads and Sainsbury’s ads, respectively. This exposure led to more interest in the Bees and ticket sales skyrocketed.
The Bees supported Oasis in 2005, and have also supported Madness on their recent tour. Their new album, Every Step’s a Yes, has drawn more comparisons with Pink Floyd. According to The Independent, “the band’s fecund array of influences sprouts via the range of abstruse instrumentation - wisps of electric sitar, recorders, dulcimer, Latin percussion, reggae horns - decorating the songs' core structures of organ and acoustic guitar. There is much to enjoy about this album.”
