The Black Crowes, an American rock band formed in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1984, have had a storied and eventful career. The band's formation, initially known as "Mr. Crowe's Garden" in 1984, saw influences from R.E.M. and a gradual evolution into a revivalist band dedicated to 1970s-era blues rock. The driving force behind the band has always been the Robinson brothers, Chris and Rich, who formed the band while attending Walton High School.
After a series of demos and lineup changes, the band, now known as The Black Crowes, signed with Def American Recordings in 1989 and released their debut album, "Shake Your Money Maker," in 1990. The album, featuring hits like "Hard to Handle" and "She Talks to Angels," achieved multi-platinum certification and established the band's reputation.
The peak of their fame came with the release of their second album, "The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion," in 1992, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Subsequent albums, including "Amorica" (1994), "Three Snakes and One Charm" (1996), "By Your Side" (1999), and "Lions" (2001), showed moderate popularity but failed to match the chart success of their first two albums.
The band went through a hiatus from 2002 to 2005 but regrouped, releasing "Warpaint" in 2008, which reached number 5 on the Billboard chart. The following years saw lineup changes, with Eddie Harsch and Marc Ford leaving in 2006, and a reinvigorated band continuing to tour and release albums, including "Before the Frost...Until the Freeze" in 2009.
The band experienced another hiatus but reunited for a 20th-anniversary tour in 2010. After a second hiatus, they announced a breakup in 2015 but reunited once more in late 2019 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of "Shake Your Money Maker." By this point, the band had none of its original lineup left except for Chris and Rich Robinson.
The Black Crowes have sold over 30 million albums, and their influence is recognized by being listed at number 92 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. Despite numerous lineup changes and periods of hiatus, the Robinson brothers remain the only constant members.
As of August 2023, the current lineup includes the Robinson brothers, longtime bassist Sven Pipien, and new members Nico Bereciartua (lead guitar), Cully Symington (drums), and Erik Deutsch (keyboards). The band continues to tour and released a double live album, "Shake Your Money Maker Live," in March 2023.
