The Breeders, an American alternative rock band originating from Dayton, Ohio, were formed in 1989 as a side-project by Kim Deal and Tanya Donelly. Initially conceived while both musicians were on tour with their primary bands Pixies and Throwing Muses, the earliest lineup included bassist Josephine Wiggs and drummer Britt Walford. Their debut album, "Pod" (1990), received critical acclaim but had limited commercial success. Despite this, it gained a cult following and was praised by Kurt Cobain.
In 1992, with the Pixies disbanded, The Breeders became Kim Deal's primary focus. The lineup shifted, with Kim's sister Kelley joining as a guitarist. The band's breakthrough came with the album "Last Splash" (1993), highlighted by the hit single "Cannonball." It achieved platinum status and marked their most commercially successful phase.
However, in 1994, drug and alcohol issues led to a hiatus. During this period, Kim formed The Amps, and Kelley dealt with legal issues. In the late '90s, The Breeders reformed with new members, releasing "Title TK" in 2002 and "Mountain Battles" in 2008.
The classic lineup, including Josephine Wiggs and Jim Macpherson, reunited in 2013 for the 20th-anniversary tour of "Last Splash." Their fifth album, "All Nerve," was released in 2018, marking the classic lineup's first full-length album since 1993. The band continues to be active, with occasional releases and performances, including appearances at music festivals like Coachella in 2023.
