The Cinematic Orchestra are a British music group founded by Jason Swinscoe, celebrated for an expansive sound that brings together jazz, electronic music, orchestral arrangements and cinematic composition. Emerging in the late 1990s and closely associated with Ninja Tune, the group developed a style built around live instrumentation, sampling and atmospheric production. Their music has reached audiences far beyond traditional jazz and electronic circles, becoming synonymous with emotional, widescreen listening.
Albums including Motion, Every Day and Ma Fleur established The Cinematic Orchestra as a distinctive force in contemporary music. "To Build a Home", featuring Patrick Watson, became one of their most widely recognised recordings, while collaborations with vocalists and musicians have continually expanded their musical world. Their compositions often develop gradually, using piano, strings, percussion and electronic textures to create music with a strong emotional and visual quality.
Live, The Cinematic Orchestra turn these layered compositions into immersive performances where jazz musicianship, electronic production and orchestral scale come together. Quiet passages can build into sweeping crescendos, allowing individual instruments and voices to emerge before becoming part of a larger arrangement. For listeners who value detailed musicianship and atmospheric live music, a The Cinematic Orchestra concert offers an opportunity to experience their evocative catalogue with additional depth and immediacy.
