The Clientele, a British indie pop band based in London, was formed in 1991 and currently consists of lead singer/guitarist Alasdair MacLean, drummer Mark Keen, and bassist James Hornsey. Over the years, they have released eight albums and five EPs.
Alasdair MacLean and James Hornsey, both originally from Hampshire, England, began their musical collaboration during school days, inspired by a shared love for the band Felt. The band, initially named The Butterfly Collectors, was formed in 1991, with Innes Phillips sharing singing and songwriting duties with MacLean. After an initial period and an unreleased album, the band reformed in 1997 and moved to London.
Their breakthrough came with the compilation "Suburban Light" in 2000, a collection of previously released singles. This compilation garnered positive reviews, establishing The Clientele's brand of appealingly melancholy pop. Their debut album, "The Violet Hour" (2003), received critical acclaim, though commercial success remained elusive.
The band's second album, "Strange Geometry" (2005), marked a departure with cleaner production and the introduction of strings. This was followed by "God Save The Clientele" (2007) and "Bonfires on the Heath" (2009), showcasing their evolving sound and sophisticated arrangements.
After a hiatus announcement in 2011, Alasdair MacLean collaborated on a project called Amor de Días. The Clientele returned for a gig in 2014 and continued touring. They reissued "Suburban Light" and released new singles in 2014. In 2017, they announced the album "Music for the Age of Miracles."
Their distinctive sound is characterized by reverb-rich production, MacLean's breathy vocals, and his fingerstyle guitar technique. The band draws lyrical inspiration from surrealist literature and early 20th-century art, creating a unique and atmospheric musical experience.
In July 2023, The Clientele released their seventh studio album, "I Am Not There Anymore," marking another chapter in their enduring and innovative musical journey.
