Lauren Weisberger. Drawing on her own experience as a personal assistant for American
Vogue editor
Anna Wintour,
Weisberger drew back the curtain on the inner workings of the cut-throat fashion world. The novel received much critical acclaim and spent six months on the
New York Times bestseller list before being adapted in a major blockbuster movie.
Created in 2006,
The Devil Wears Prada movie most notably featured
Meryl Streep. Streep earned a Golden Globe award for Best Actress and an Academy Award Nomination for Best Actress for her portrayal of Miranda Priestly, the influential, yet terrifying, editor-in-chief of
Runway. The cast also included
Anne Hathaway in the lead role of Andrea Sachs,
Emily Blunt as Miranda’s Senior Assistant Emily, and
Stanley Tucci as Nigel,
Runway’s Art Director.
In 2015, it was rumoured that Broadway producer
Kevin McCollum signed a deal with Fox to develop some of its films into musicals, most notably,
Mrs Doubtfire and
The Devil Wears Prada. It was confirmed in 2017 that
McCollum was working with musical legend
Elton John and
Shaina Taub to develop
The Devil Wears Prada musical. The world premiere of the musical, after numerous postponements due to Covid, opened in July 2022 at the James M. Nederlander Theatre in Chicago.
In September 2023, it was announced that the musical will have its UK premiere at the Theatre Royal, Plymouth before transferring to the Dominion Theatre in October 2024.
