The Eagles were formed in 1971 in Los Angeles by four musicians from the backing group of acclaimed folk-rock singer Linda Ronstadt. Bernie Leadon had been a member of rock bands Hearts and Flowers and The Flying Burrito Brothers, Randy Meisner had been a member of Poco, Glenn Frey had been with Longbranch Pennywhistle, and Don Henley had led Shiloh. With such talent and experience, the Eagles were immediately taken on by embryonic Asylum Records.

Their debut album, The Eagles, was recorded in London, and featured the tracks Take it Easy and Witchy Woman, which both reached the US top 20. The concept album Desperado showcased the popular track of the same name, and the ensuing On The Border album consolidated the Eagles’ reputation for delivering sound and relaxed but purposeful rock-folk harmonies, with Best of My Love going to Number 1 in the US. They became a quintet at this time with the addition of Don Felder on guitar and vocals. During this time, Eagles tickets sold well.

The next album, One of These Nights, projected the Eagles to the heady heights of superstardom, and its title track went to Number 1 in the US charts. The album quickly went platinum and its two singles, Lyin’ Eyes and Take It to the Limit became hugely successful in their own right. Eagles tickets for their tours then started flying out.

One Of These Nights took the Eagles to international as well as stateside success, with each single entering the Top 30 in the UK, although the new pressures attendant on superstardom led Bernie Leadon to leave the group in 1975 to form the less heavyweight Leadon-Georgiades band. Leadon was replaced by the successful solo artist Joe Walsh. Hotel California subsequently stayed at the top of the album charts in the US for eight weeks and spun off two enormously successful singles, the title track and New Kid in Town. The album sold over nine million copies worldwide in its release year and has been popular ever since.

By the late 70s, the Eagles were beginning to wane. The Heartache Tonight single from the album The Long Run went to Number 1 in the US again, but the album was considered disappointing. The Eagles split up in 1982, when Walsh went back to his solo career whilst the other members left to begin their own solo careers, with mixed results. The band reformed in the late 1990s, and Eagles tours are very popular with people of all ages.
