Their first album was released in 2008, under the title The Recordings of the Middle East. It was an independent album based upon the music that they had played since their formation in 2005. For those intervening three years the band toured extensively in their local area of Townsville in Queensland, Australia, as well as up and down the east coast of the country, selling Middle East tickets very successfully. Immediately following the release of their first independent album the band broke up, only to reconvene eight months later to release an abridged EP version of their first album through Spunk Records in the May of 2009.
A diverse musical collective of individuals create a significant variation in terms of sound. Fans and critics alike have found it almost impossible to define the band and categorise them into a specific genre. The members describe themselves as an indie fusion of folk, pop, post-rock, country and ambient sounds. They feature both electric and acoustic guitars, as well as drums, hand percussion instruments, piano, glockenspiels and trumpets. The singers also have an incredible vocal harmony.
Most of their success to date has been on their East Coast tours in Australia and at Australian festivals, such as Splendour In The Grass and the Woodford Folk Festival. They are slowly building a reputation in the United States, with Pitchfork Media offering a free downloadable version of their song The Darkest Side. This has led to exposure that helped them sell the best Middle East tickets as a supporting tour when they were the opening act for the band Grizzly Bear for their shows in Melbourne. In addition, The Middle East have been picked as a supporting act at the Sydney Festival. According to the band's website, they have a number of tour dates in the summer, throughout the United Kingdom, as well as Belgium, Holland, Norway and Ireland. In short, the band is just now beginning to become well established; music lovers should get their Middle East tickets now to catch this act.
