Based in Brooklyn, but formed in Cincinnati in 1999, The National are an indie rock band whose sound has been compared to Wilco, Joy Division and Bruce Springsteen. The lyrics are written by Matt Berninger, who is also the lead singer, while the band itself is made up of two pairs of brothers on the instruments. Aaron and Bryce Dessner play guitar, bass and piano, while Scott and Bryan Devendorf play bass and guitar as well as drums, respectively. In addition, Padma Newsome from Clogs often performs with the band on keyboards and strings.
The formation of the band began in 1991 when Matt and Scott were attending the University of Cincinnati. They formed a garage band that lasted for five years, but eventually dissolved. In addition, Bryan, Bryce and Aaron had been childhood friends, playing together in various bands over the years. When their band broke up in 1998, everyone migrated to Brooklyn and formed The National in 1999.
The band members were involved in several businesses during the dotcom era, and managed to put together enough money to form an independent label, on which they released their debut album in 2001. They sold plenty of The National tickets to fans to support themselves while they wrote. By 2004 the band had all quit their day jobs and began working on their music full time; they worked with a new label called Beggar’s Banquet Records.
The first album with the new label was entitled Alligator, which was met with critical acclaim in the Los Angeles Times and other publications. This led to increased exposure and a series of sell out shows in Los Angeles and New York, as well as tours with bands such as the Editors, and some festivals in 2006. The album went on to sell over 80,000 copies, leading to the success of their fourth album, Boxer, which was released in 2007. The band then performed on several of the late shows, and The National Boxer tour tickets, where they were the opener, sold well. They also played alongside Modest Mouse on the R.E.M. Accelerate tour. Their most recent release is High Violet, which came out in May 2010 and hit number three in the United States, number two in Canada, and number five in the United Kingdom.
